Theoretical plates (N) quantify the efficiency of a separation column (GC, HPLC, distillation). Higher N means sharper peaks and better resolution. Plate height (H) is the column length per plate; smaller H indicates higher efficiency.

What are the accuracy limits?

This calculator assumes symmetrical Gaussian peaks. Real peaks with tailing/fronting give overestimated N. The error can be 10‑30% for significantly asymmetric peaks.

When do the approximations fail?

For very early eluting peaks (tR close to dead time), extra‑column effects dominate. Also, for non‑linear chromatography or strongly interacting systems, plate models are inadequate.

Any unit pitfalls?

Always check that tR and W are in the same unit before applying the formula. The tool converts internally, but manual calculations require consistency.

Measurement tips?

Use baseline width for well‑separated peaks. For overlapping peaks, half‑height width is more reliable. Use data system integration, not ruler estimates.
