Concept explained simply
An assumption is something you believe might be true. A hypothesis is a belief you can try to disprove with data.
Use this template:

Good hypotheses are:
- Specific: clear change, segment, metric.
- Measurable: baseline and target are numbers.
- Falsifiable: a reasonable chance to be wrong.
- Time-bound: decision window is explicit.
Mental model: Input → Mechanism → Outcome
- Input (Cause): the change you will make.
- Mechanism (Why): why the change should work.
- Outcome (Effect): the metric that should move.
Think of the input as the only knob you turn. If the metric moves as expected, your mechanism is plausible; if not, you’ve learned faster and cheaper than launching blindly.
Worked examples
Example 1: Onboarding simplification
Assumption: “Too many steps scare users.”
Hypothesis: If we reduce onboarding from 6 to 3 steps for new SMB signups, activation rate will increase from 42% to at least 55% within 14 days, because fewer steps lower cognitive load. Measured by activation rate (completed key action) within 14 days of signup.

Example 2: Pricing option
Assumption: “Freelancers want a cheaper monthly plan.”

How to turn assumptions into testable hypotheses (step-by-step)
- List assumptions: Write each as a simple sentence. Example: “Users abandon because checkout is slow.”
- Score risk: High risk = big impact + low evidence. Tackle high-risk first.
- Choose the input: What exact change will you make? Keep it single and controllable.
- Pick the metric: One primary metric aligned to the outcome you care about. Avoid vanity metrics.
- Get the baseline: Current value for the same segment and period.
- Set the target and timeframe: Minimum uplift or threshold and when you’ll decide.
- Write the mechanism: The causal story; forces you to think about why it should work.
- Define a decision rule: What you’ll do if it passes/fails (ship, iterate, or stop).

Choosing metrics and thresholds
- Match metric to the mechanism: fewer steps → activation; faster load → conversion; clearer copy → CTR.
- Use confidence-friendly targets: a threshold larger than noise (e.g., +3–5 percentage points, or +10–20% relative) so you can detect it.
- Timeframe: long enough to observe the effect, short enough to act (1–4 weeks for funnel metrics is common).
Quality checklist
- Is the input a single, controllable change?
- Is the segment clearly defined?
- Is there one primary metric, with baseline and target numbers?
- Is the timeframe explicit?
- Is the hypothesis falsifiable (reasonable chance to fail)?
- Is the mechanism stated (why it should work)?

Common mistakes and self-check
- Vague metrics: “Improve engagement” → specify a metric (e.g., weekly active users).
- No baseline: Without baseline, you can’t gauge uplift. Add current value for the same segment.
- Multiple simultaneous changes: Hard to attribute. Split into separate hypotheses.
- Too-small target: Below noise level. Increase target or sample size.
- Missing timeframe: Decisions drift. Add an explicit window.
- Vanity metrics: Page views instead of activation or revenue. Align with outcome.
Self-check: Read your hypothesis aloud. Could a reasonable colleague disagree and test would decide it within the timeframe? If not, refine.
