Concept explained simply
A marketing hypothesis is a precise, testable prediction about how a change will affect a specific metric for a specific audience within a timeframe.
Mental model
Think cause → effect: If we change X (cause) for Y (who) in Z place (where), then metric M (effect) will move by an amount D because of reason R (insight). We will measure it for T time with guardrails G to stay safe.
What makes a good hypothesis
- Specific: Exactly what changes, where, and for whom.
- Measurable: One primary metric that determines success.
- Actionable: If it wins, we can ship it; if it loses, we learn why.
- Relevant: Tied to a business objective (e.g., activation, conversion).
- Testable & falsifiable: It could be proven wrong by data.
- Time-bound: Clear test window or traffic threshold.
- Ethical: No deception or harm to users.
- Prioritized: Expected impact vs. effort and risk.
Hypothesis template
Use this structure:
- If we [change X] for [segment Y] on/in [location/channel Z],
- then [primary metric M] will change by [direction and size D],

Example template filled
If we add a benefit-focused headline on the pricing page for new visitors on mobile, then the click-through rate to checkout will increase by +10% because clarity reduces friction, measured over 14 days with guardrails: bounce rate not worse than +2% and refund rate not worse than +0.5%.
Choosing metrics
- Primary metric: One metric that determines success (e.g., CTR to signup, activation rate, purchase conversion).
- Secondary metrics: Help interpret why (e.g., scroll depth, step conversion).
- Guardrails: Protect user experience and unit economics (e.g., bounce rate, page load time, CPA, refund rate).
- Measurement window: Enough time/traffic to reach stable estimates. Rough rule: test length ≈ required sample per variant ÷ daily traffic per variant.
Picking the right primary metric
- Change on a page → pick a metric closest to that action (e.g., CTA CTR, step completion).
- Change in email → opens or clicks depending on the change (subject line vs. body).
- Beware long-lag metrics as primary if traffic/time are limited; use them as secondary.
Worked examples
Example 1 — Email subject line
If we add a benefit-led subject line ("Cut setup time by 50%") for trial users on day-1 onboarding email, then open rate will increase by +8% because clearer value increases opens, measured over 7 days, with guardrails: unsubscribe rate not worse than +0.1% and spam complaints not worse than baseline.
Example 2 — Landing page hero
If we replace a generic hero image with a product-in-action GIF for new paid search visitors, then click-through to signup will increase by +12% because seeing the product reduces uncertainty, measured until 10,000 sessions per variant or 14 days (whichever first), with guardrails: bounce rate not worse than +2% and LCP under 2.5s.
Example 3 — Pricing CTA copy
If we change the pricing CTA from "Start trial" to "Start 14-day free trial — no card required" for returning desktop visitors, then trial start rate will increase by +15% because removing perceived risk improves conversion, measured over 21 days, with guardrails: support tickets per 1,000 users not worse than +5%.
Quick rules of thumb
- One primary metric per test.
- Predict direction and magnitude (even if rough).
- Define segment and location; avoid platform-wide tests by default.
- List guardrails before launch.
- Tie each hypothesis to a user insight (data, research, or heuristic).

Common mistakes and how to self-check
- Vague metrics: "engagement" or "conversion" without definition. Fix: name the exact event and window.
- Multiple primaries: competing success criteria. Fix: choose one; others become secondary.
- No falsifiability: "improve" without direction or size. Fix: predict direction and an effect size.
- Ignoring guardrails: wins that harm UX or economics. Fix: add 1–2 guardrails up front.
- Too broad audience: noisy results. Fix: segment to the audience affected by the change.
- Long-lag primary metric with low traffic: tests never converge. Fix: pick a closer proxy as primary, keep long-lag as secondary.
Self-check in 60 seconds
- Read your hypothesis aloud. Can a teammate run the test without asking a single clarifying question?
- Underline the cause, audience, location, metric, size, timeframe, and guardrails. Are any missing?
- Would opposite results teach you something? If not, it is not falsifiable.
Practical projects
- Create a 10-item hypothesis backlog for one funnel stage (e.g., signup). For each, add expected uplift, risk, effort, and a one-line rationale.
- Turn three support tickets or user interviews into three testable hypotheses with metrics and guardrails.
