Concept explained simply
Rolling retention on day D answers: Of all users who started on day 0 (your cohort), what percent came back on or after day D?
It is a “survival” viewpoint: users are considered retained if they have not churned by day D. Unlike exact-day retention (return exactly on day D), rolling retention smooths daily noise and better reflects long-term product value.
Mental model
Imagine each user carrying a light. The light stays on until their last active day. On day D, rolling retention is the share of cohort lights still on at D (i.e., at least one activity on or after day D).
Definition and formula
- Cohort: users who started on a given date/week/month.
- Active event: any event that clearly means product use (e.g., session_start, purchase, message_sent). Define it before analysis.
RollingRetention(D) = Distinct users in cohort with last_active_date ≥ cohort_start + D / Distinct users in cohort
Compare metrics
- Exact-day retention (Day D): returned exactly on day D.
- Bracket retention (D to D+1): returned within the next day window.
- Rolling retention (≥ D): returned at least once on or after day D.
Rolling retention is higher than bracket/exact-day and is best for long-term user survival trends.
How to calculate it (step-by-step)
- Choose your cohort (e.g., users who installed in April).
- Choose the active event(s) that count as “return.”
- For each user, find their last_active_date.
- For day D, count users with last_active_date ≥ cohort_start + D.
- Divide by cohort size and format as a percentage.
Spreadsheet steps
- List users with start_date and last_active_date.
- Add column threshold_date = start_date + D.
- Flag retained = last_active_date ≥ threshold_date.
- Rolling retention = average(retained flag).
Worked examples
Example 1: Mobile app, Day 7
Cohort: 5 users installed on 2025-01-01. Last active dates: U1=01-09, U2=01-03, U3=01-10, U4=01-01, U5=01-15. Day 7 threshold = 2025-01-08.
- Retained at Day 7 if last_active ≥ 01-08: U1 (09), U3 (10), U5 (15) → 3 users.
- RollingRetention(7) = 3/5 = 60%.
Example 2: E-commerce, Day 30 by month
Cohort: 1,000 users with signup in March. Last active on or after signup+30: 420 users. RollingRetention(30) = 420/1,000 = 42%.

Paid Search: 35%. Organic: 48%. Same product, different intent. Organic users tend to survive longer—shift budget or improve onboarding for Paid Search.
Example 3: Subscription app, Day 90
Cohort: 2,400 signups in Q1. Active event = any app open or successful renewal. Users with last active ≥ start+90: 1,320. RollingRetention(90) = 1,320/2,400 = 55%.
Interpretation: Over half of Q1 users stayed active through 3 months.
Common mistakes and self-checks
- Mixing definitions: Using exact-day queries while reporting rolling retention. Self-check: Does your logic use last_active_date ≥ start+D?
- Right censoring: Including very recent cohorts that haven’t had enough time. Self-check: Exclude cohorts where today < start+D.
- Wrong event choice: Counting background pings or push opens as “active.” Self-check: Use purposeful events (e.g., session start, order completed).
- Double counting: Not deduping users by cohort. Self-check: Distinct users per cohort.
- Timezone drift: Threshold comparisons off by hours. Self-check: Convert to a single timezone before date math.
